How to keep cool in the heartwave

Our Heatwave advice

This week the Met Office has issued a red weather warning for the first time in history for high temperatures expected on Monday and Tuesday across much of the central part of the UK.

Temperatures are expected to soar to 40 degrees. The weather warning covers a threat to life for both those with vulnerabilities such as elderly or those very young who are unable to regulate their own temperature as well as those who are fit and healthy.

Here are some of our top tips to survive the heat.

  • Make sure those who are vulnerable have the support they need.

  • Drink lots of clear fluids and avoid relying on caffeinated and alcoholic drinks that can cause further dehydration.

  • Close blinds and curtains

  • Stay inside during peak sun (11am - 3pm)

  • Avoid exercising during peak sun

  • Never leave a child or pet in the car. A child or animal will be seriously injured if the temperature reaches over 45 degrees in less than an hour. A car parked in the sun may reach 50 degrees.

  • If you go out wear a high factor sunscreen and a hat

  • The normal body temperature is around 36-37.5 degrees. Consider active cooling if someone has a high temperature, you can use a fan or light spray bottle, but take care not to cause hypothermia and seek medical advice.

  • Some people recommend ventilating your house in the night and closing windows and doors during the day

  • Eat well, drinking lots of fluids causes loss of salts through sweating. Drinking too much water and not eating can cause electrolyte imbalances.

  • If you have young children consider water or ice play indoors or in the shade. Stock up ice creams and lollies.

  • If you have air conditioning set it up and close windows and doors.

  • Heat rises so downstairs rooms are likely to be cooler
