FAQs for Care Home Transfers with MET Medical

At MET Medical, we understand that arranging a care home transfer for a loved one can feel overwhelming. Whether you're moving a family member to a new residence, taking them to a specialist appointment, or arranging long-distance transport, we’re here to help. Below are some of the most frequently asked questions about our care home transfer service.

Can I bring luggage with the patient?

Yes, we can accommodate luggage, but we advise keeping it to a reasonable amount due to space limitations in the ambulance. If you have multiple suitcases or large items, please let us know in advance so we can make the necessary arrangements. Safety comes first so you may need to arrange additional transport if there’s furniture or lots of bags. We can help with this if needed.

Can you administer medication during the journey?

Yes, our trained medical staff can administer medication if required. We’ll take a detailed medical history and current medications in advance. We’ll ensure the transfer is suitably staffed for every eventuality. Our full time team is made up of ambulance crews, registered paramedics, nurses, doctors and Advanced Clinical Practitioners.

Are you experienced in caring for patients with complex needs or dementia?

Absolutely. Our team has extensive experience in caring for patients with complex medical needs, including those with dementia, mobility impairments, and other long-term conditions. We ensure a calm, comfortable, and reassuring environment for all patients. We’ll find out as much as we can about the patient, especially if we are travelling a long distance, to ensure individual attention.

Can I travel with the patient?

Yes, in most cases, a family member or carer can travel with the patient. However, space may be limited, so please check with us beforehand. If we cannot accommodate an extra passenger, we will help coordinate alternative transport solutions. Generally, we always have space for one relative or carer.

Do you cover long-distance transfers?

Yes, we provide both short and long-distance transfers across the UK and internationally. Our ambulances are fully equipped for extended journeys, ensuring the patient’s comfort and medical needs are met throughout.

What if the patient needs the toilet during the journey?

We plan each journey carefully, including scheduled comfort breaks where appropriate. For patients who require assistance, our trained staff can provide support. We also have onboard equipment, such as portable urinals and bedpans, if needed. We also have wheelchairs so we can make use of accessible facilities enroute if suitable.

Do you provide food on long-distance journeys?

Yes, for longer trips, we can provide refreshments and meals tailored to the patient’s dietary requirements. Please let us know in advance about any specific dietary needs or preferences. We are equipped with fridges and hot water for hot drinks.

My mother has a catheter. Can you transfer her safely?

Yes, we have experience in transferring patients with catheters, stomas, and other medical equipment. Our staff are trained to monitor and manage these needs to ensure a safe and comfortable journey. Just make sure you give us details prior to the transfer date.

Does a carer have to travel with the patient on the ambulance?

Not necessarily. Our medical team can provide full care during the journey. However, if a carer or family member wishes to accompany the patient, they are welcome to do so, space permitting.

How do I arrange a care home transfer?

Booking a transfer with MET Medical is simple. Just contact our team with details of the patient’s needs, journey length, and any specific medical requirements. We will handle the rest, ensuring a smooth and stress-free experience.

Can I get updates along the journey?
